About the event
The next Ondo unlock falls on Monday 18 January 2027. Under the governance schedule the Ondo DAO adopted in January 2024, about 1.94 billion ONDO, or 19.4% of the fixed 10 billion supply, comes out of lock-up that day, the third of the yearly cliffs. DefiLlama and Tokenomics.com put the same tranche at 1.71 billion (17.1%). The gap of about 230 million tokens comes from how each source reads the vesting of investors and core contributors, and Ondo has not said which reading is right.
ONDO is the governance token of the Ondo DAO and of the Flux Finance lending protocol, an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. The Ondo Foundation docs state that the supply was set at 10 billion at launch and that no inflation is scheduled or planned. Every new token in circulation therefore comes from lock-ups ending, as in any token unlock.
Why 18 January: the third cliff of FIP-08
ONDO became transferable after a DAO vote. The Foundation docs give the date as 18 January 2024. The vote in question was FIP-08, “Release of the ONDO token lock-up”, posted by the Ondo Foundation on 9 January 2024 and executed on Tally as proposal 10.
FIP-08 sets yearly steps rather than a monthly drip. Locked tokens are released 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months after that first unlock. Month 36 lands on 18 January 2027.
Ondo unlock size: 1.94 billion or 1.71 billion?
The charts published with FIP-08 show three locked pools moving on each anniversary. Ecosystem Growth releases its 3.96 billion locked tokens in five equal steps of about 792 million, from month 12 to month 60. Protocol Development (3.3 billion) and Private Sales (1.29 billion) are each drawn in four steps, at months 12, 24, 36 and 48. That gives 825 million and about 322.6 million per step. Added together, the January 2027 tranche comes to 1,939.6 million ONDO.
The wording around those charts is less tidy. FIP-08 says investors and core contributors stay locked for at least 12 months, then see a release “over the following four years (five years total)”. The Foundation docs list a “1-year lock + 48-month release” for seed and Series A investors. Both describe a five-year window, while the charts end those two pools at month 48. Only the charts give tranche sizes.
The trackers took different routes. DefiLlama cuts each of the three pools into five equal tranches, but starts them at launch in January 2024 and ends them in January 2028. That puts a Protocol Development and Private Sales release at launch, while FIP-08 says those groups stayed locked for at least 12 months. Tokenomics.com also shows 1.71 billion for January 2027, followed by two more unlocks in 2028 and 2029: five equal yearly steps, closer to the “five years total” wording. Both land on the same January 2027 figure, about 230 million below the governance charts.
| Pool | FIP-08 charts (ONDO) | DefiLlama / Tokenomics.com (ONDO) |
|---|---|---|
| Ecosystem Growth | 792.05 million | 792.05 million |
| Protocol Development | 825 million | 660 million |
| Private Sales | 322.56 million | 258.05 million |
| Total | 1,939.6 million (19.4%) | 1,710.1 million (17.1%) |
Tokenomist lists the next unlock on 18 January 2027, going to Ecosystem Growth, without showing the amount on its public page. Media citing Tokenomist data in January 2026 reported 1.94 billion for that year’s tranche, split 825 million, 792.05 million and 322.56 million, exactly as in FIP-08. On 16 October 2026, though, Tokenomist showed 4,869,330,647 ONDO (48.69%) as unlocked, a level that fits the 1.71 billion model. Ondo has not published a statement on the 2027 amount, and our research did not include an on-chain audit of the vesting wallets.
If the governance charts hold, about 7.27 billion ONDO (roughly 73% of supply) will be out of lock-up after 18 January. Unlocked does not mean sold, or even circulating. Market data sites leave out tokens held in foundation and ecosystem wallets, which is one reason CoinGecko showed about 4.87 billion ONDO in circulation in October 2026.
Who receives the tokens
The three pools go to different groups. Ecosystem Growth is the largest allocation, at about 52.1% of supply, of which 1.25 billion was free at launch; FIP-08 earmarks it for incentives such as airdrops and for developers, educators and researchers. Protocol Development (33%) covers core contributors building Ondo’s products. Private Sales (about 12.9%) belongs to the seed and Series A investors.
The Foundation docs add detail on investors: seed and Series A each received under 7% of supply. The docs also say Ondo core team members are bound by a five-year lock-up. Our glossary entry on tokenomics explains how allocation tables and vesting fit together.

What happened at the 2025 and 2026 unlocks
The first cliff came on 18 January 2025. Cryptoast reported on 6 January 2025 that 1.94 billion ONDO, 19.4% of the maximum supply, would be released, worth “about $3 billion” at the prices of that day. That was more than the whole circulating supply at the time. Tokenomics.com records that ONDO fell as much as 5.0% in the six days after the unlock.
The second cliff followed on 18 January 2026. DL News valued it on 16 January 2026 at about $737 million at that day’s prices, with roughly $123 million going to private-sale investors such as Pantera Capital and Founders Fund, and said circulating supply would rise by 61%. The investor share in those figures, about 16.7%, sits close to the FIP-08 split (16.6%) and further from DefiLlama’s 15.1%. Tokenomics.com records a drop of up to 30.2% within 14 days. These are dated observations: crypto prices moved for many reasons in both months, and no source links the moves to the unlock alone.
Outlets placed both unlocks on 17, 18 or 19 January. The official anniversary is the 18th, and no hour has ever been published. DefiLlama’s data file carries a timestamp of 17 January 2027 at 17:25 UTC, which comes from adding 365.24 days per year; its own daily chart puts the step on 18 January. For another large cliff on the calendar, see the final Arbitrum team and investor unlock in March 2027.
What Ondo Finance does
Ondo Finance issues tokenised versions of US Treasury exposure and listed US stocks. In October 2026 the ondo.finance home page showed $2.35 billion in USDY, a yield-bearing dollar token not offered in the United States. OUSG, which holds short-term US Treasuries through funds led by BlackRock’s BUIDL and offers 24/7 minting and redemption to accredited investors who are qualified purchasers, held $318.95 million. USDY is not a payment stablecoin; our guide to how stablecoins work covers the difference.
The same page showed $1.31 billion in Ondo Stocks, a range of more than 450 tokenised US securities, also unavailable in the US. The site lists Nexus, a service that lets issuers of tokenised Treasuries and stablecoins offer instant minting and redemption, plus an announced Ondo Private Markets product.
The European angle: a prospectus, not MiCA
European investors reach Ondo’s stock tokens through securities law. On 5 May 2026 the Liechtenstein Financial Market Authority (FMA) approved a supplement to the base prospectus of Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited under the EU Prospectus Regulation 2017/1129. The certificate describes the securities as debt securities of less than €100,000. It was sent to the AMF in France, CONSOB in Italy and the other EU and EEA regulators. Press reports date the base prospectus approval to November 2025.
Distribution followed. A Blockchain.com and Ondo press release of 3 February 2026 said users in 30 EEA states could buy, sell and hold more than 200 tokenised US stocks and ETFs in the Blockchain.com DeFi wallet. The release dates the Ondo Global Markets launch to September 2025.

These products are prospectus-based debt securities, not crypto-assets authorised under MiCA. Our guide to the MiCA regulation explains where that line sits. The ONDO token has no EU licence status linked to the prospectus, and we found no ONDO-specific MiCA white paper.
What is not known yet
Ondo has not confirmed whether the January 2027 tranche is 1.94 billion or 1.71 billion. No official hour exists either.
The Foundation has published no plan for the Ecosystem Growth and Protocol Development tokens, which can stay in treasury wallets. A DAO vote could in theory change the lock-ups; none has been proposed.
Under the FIP-08 charts, January 2028 brings the last tranche for investors and core contributors, again about 1.94 billion ONDO with Ecosystem Growth included, and January 2029 a final 792 million for Ecosystem Growth alone. DefiLlama ends its schedule in January 2028; Tokenomics.com runs to January 2029.
