About Dogecoin (DOGE)
Dogecoin (DOGE) is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency launched on 6 December 2013 as a light-hearted take on Bitcoin, with the Shiba Inu dog of the “Doge” meme as its mascot. More than a decade later, Dogecoin is still one of the most widely recognised coins, used for tipping, small payments and, above all, speculation. This page explains what Dogecoin is, how the network works, its history and the risks to know before buying DOGE.
What is Dogecoin?
Dogecoin was created by two software engineers, Billy Markus (then at IBM) and Jackson Palmer (then at Adobe). Markus built the protocol from existing code: Luckycoin, itself derived from Litecoin. The goal was a fun, friendly currency, without the seriousness that surrounded Bitcoin at the time.
Unlike most later meme coins, which are tokens issued on another blockchain, Dogecoin has its own blockchain, its own miners and its own software, Dogecoin Core. The project is maintained by volunteer developers, and the Dogecoin Foundation, re-established in August 2021, supports development and publishes a public plan called the Trailmap.
How Dogecoin works
Consensus: proof of work with Scrypt
Dogecoin uses proof of work, like Bitcoin, but with the Scrypt algorithm inherited from Litecoin. A new block is produced roughly every minute, against ten minutes for Bitcoin, which makes confirmations faster.
Since September 2014, Dogecoin supports merged mining (AuxPoW) with Litecoin: miners can secure both networks with the same hardware and work. This change was adopted to strengthen Dogecoin’s security when mining rewards alone were no longer attractive enough.
Supply: no maximum cap
Dogecoin’s monetary policy is the main difference with Bitcoin. A cap of 100 billion DOGE was originally planned, but in February 2014 the developers decided not to add it to the code. Today each block pays a fixed reward of 10,000 DOGE, which means about 5 billion new DOGE are created every year, with no end date.
Because the issuance is constant in absolute terms, the annual inflation rate falls slowly as the total supply grows. Supporters see this as a way to keep coins spendable; critics point out that holders are diluted every year.
A short history of Dogecoin
- December 2013: official launch of Dogecoin.
- January 2014: the community raises funds to help the Jamaican bobsleigh team travel to the Sochi Winter Olympics.
- March 2014: Dogecoin users sponsor NASCAR driver Josh Wise; the block reward becomes static.
- September 2014: merged mining with Litecoin goes live.
- 2021: a speculative surge driven by social media, then a sharp drop around Elon Musk’s appearance on Saturday Night Live on 8 May; in August the Dogecoin Foundation is re-established.
- December 2021: the Foundation publishes its Trailmap (Libdogecoin, GigaWallet and other projects).
- April 2023: Twitter briefly replaces its bird logo with the Doge image.
- November 2025: the Grayscale Dogecoin Trust ETF (GDOG) starts trading on NYSE Arca, presented as the first spot Dogecoin ETF in the United States.
What is Dogecoin used for?
DOGE is mainly used for tipping and small online payments, where its one-minute blocks and generally low fees are practical. A number of merchants and payment providers accept it. It is also a trading asset, and its price is very sensitive to social media and public figures.
Dogecoin does not support complex smart contracts like Ethereum: it is a simple payment currency, by design.
Dogecoin vs Bitcoin and Litecoin
- Supply: Bitcoin is capped at 21 million coins and Litecoin at 84 million; Dogecoin has no cap.
- Speed: one block per minute, against 10 minutes for Bitcoin and 2.5 minutes for Litecoin.
- Mining: Scrypt, shared with Litecoin through merged mining.
Risks and criticism
- Volatility: DOGE has known extreme rises and falls, often triggered by a single post or a celebrity.
- Dilution: with 5 billion new coins a year, demand has to keep growing just to absorb new supply.
- Limited development: the project relies on a small group of volunteers and its roadmap moves slowly.
- Mining dependency: much of Dogecoin’s security comes from Litecoin miners through merged mining.
- Scams: fake giveaways using the names of public figures are common. Never send DOGE to “double” it.
How to buy and store Dogecoin
DOGE is listed on most major exchanges. Our guide on how to buy crypto explains the steps and the checks to make before choosing a platform.
To store it, you can keep DOGE on an exchange (simple, but you depend on the platform), use a software wallet such as Dogecoin Core, or a hardware wallet that supports Dogecoin. For long-term holdings, a cold wallet and a well-protected recovery phrase remain the safest choice. Wallets and documentation are listed on the official Dogecoin website.
Frequently asked questions
Who created Dogecoin?
Dogecoin was created in December 2013 by two software engineers, Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer. Markus wrote the code, based on Luckycoin and Litecoin, while Palmer brought the Shiba Inu "Doge" meme branding. Both stepped back from the project years ago; today it is maintained by volunteer developers and supported by the Dogecoin Foundation.
Is there a maximum supply of Dogecoin?
No. Dogecoin has no supply cap. Every block pays a fixed reward of 10,000 DOGE, so about 5 billion new coins are created each year. Since this amount does not change, the inflation rate in percentage terms decreases slowly over time, but the total number of DOGE keeps growing indefinitely.
Is Dogecoin a good investment?
Coindaro does not give investment advice. Dogecoin is a highly volatile asset whose price depends heavily on social media and public figures, and its supply grows every year. If you buy DOGE, only invest money you can afford to lose, diversify, and keep your coins in a wallet you control.
Can you mine Dogecoin?
Yes. Dogecoin uses Scrypt proof of work and has supported merged mining with Litecoin since September 2014. In practice, mining requires specialised Scrypt ASIC machines, and most miners mine Litecoin and Dogecoin together through pools. Mining with a regular computer is no longer profitable because of network difficulty.
Is there a Dogecoin ETF?
Yes. In the United States, the Grayscale Dogecoin Trust ETF (ticker GDOG) began trading on NYSE Arca in November 2025 and was described as the first spot Dogecoin ETF in the country. Earlier, in September 2025, the REX-Osprey DOGE fund launched with a different, non-spot structure.
Crypto-assets are volatile and you can lose all the money you invest. Nothing published on Coindaro is investment advice.
