An altcoin, short for “alternative coin”, is any cryptocurrency that is not Bitcoin. The word appeared when Bitcoin was the only reference and every new coin was seen as an alternative to it. Today it covers thousands of assets, from Ethereum, the second-largest network, to tokens created last week.

Main types of altcoins

  • Layer-1 coins: the native coins of independent blockchains, such as ether, SOL or ADA, used to pay fees and secure the network.
  • Stablecoins: tokens designed to track a currency, usually the US dollar. Technically altcoins, they behave very differently because their price is meant to stay stable.
  • DeFi and utility tokens: tokens linked to an application, often used for governance votes or fee discounts.
  • Meme coins: tokens driven mostly by community and online culture, with little or no utility.
  • Exchange tokens: coins issued by trading platforms, sometimes offering fee discounts.

Some altcoins are forks of Bitcoin’s code, such as Litecoin or Bitcoin Cash; others use entirely new designs.

A simple example

Imagine a portfolio of $1,000: $600 in bitcoin and $400 split across four altcoins. If the crypto market falls 20%, bitcoin might drop 20% while small altcoins fall 40% or more, because their liquidity is lower. In a rising market the reverse can happen. That higher volatility is typical of altcoins.

Why altcoins matter

Altcoins carry most of the innovation in crypto: smart contracts, decentralized finance, NFTs, faster payments or privacy. Traders also follow “altcoin season”, periods when altcoins outperform bitcoin, measured by Bitcoin’s dominance, its share of the total market capitalization.

Risks and limits

  • Most altcoins created in past cycles have lost almost all their value or been abandoned.
  • Small caps are easy to manipulate, and a few large holders can move the price.
  • Many tokens have heavy inflation or large unlocks ahead; study their tokenomics before buying.
  • Some altcoins may be treated as securities in certain countries, which can lead to delistings.
  • Scam tokens and “rug pulls” are common. Check the team, the code audits and where the token is traded.
