Bitpanda review

8.0/10 MiCA (EU) CASP BaFin (Germany)

Bitpanda is one of the safest and most complete regulated apps for European investors, with crypto, stocks and metals in one place. Its broker fees are high, so frequent traders should use Bitpanda Fusion or look elsewhere.

Our review

This Bitpanda review looks at one of Europe’s best-known crypto brokers as of October 2026: who runs it, which licences it holds, what you really pay, how it protects client assets and who it suits. Bitpanda was founded in Vienna in 2014 as Coinimal by Eric Demuth, Paul Klanschek and Christian Trummer, and took its current name in 2018. It says it serves more than 7 million users.

Unlike an order-book exchange, the main Bitpanda app is a broker: you buy and sell at a price quoted by Bitpanda, with the fee built into that price. Next to it sits Bitpanda Fusion, an advanced trading interface with volume-based fees. The platform also offers stocks, ETFs, precious metals and crypto indices, which makes it a multi-asset investment app more than a pure crypto exchange.

Bitpanda regulation and licences

Bitpanda is one of the most heavily licensed crypto companies in the European Union. Three group entities appear in the ESMA interim MiCA register as authorised crypto-asset service providers (CASPs):

  • Bitpanda Asset Management GmbH (Berlin), authorised by Germany’s BaFin on 24 January 2025;
  • BP23 CA Limited, authorised by the Malta Financial Services Authority on 27 January 2025;
  • Bitpanda GmbH (Vienna), authorised by Austria’s FMA on 9 April 2025, with passporting to the other EEA countries.

Under the MiCA regulation, these authorisations let Bitpanda offer custody, crypto-to-fiat and crypto-to-crypto exchange, order execution and crypto transfers across the EEA. The group also holds a payment institution licence under PSD2 through Bitpanda Payments GmbH and a MiFID II licence for its securities business; its security page mentions 16 European licences and registrations in total.

Bitpanda does not serve customers in the United States. We found no public enforcement action that changed its licences, but regulators publish sanctions with some delay, so check the FMA and BaFin websites if this matters to you.

Bitpanda fees

Fees are where Bitpanda is weakest. In the broker app, each coin belongs to a price tier and the trading fee is added to the quoted price. Bitpanda’s cost transparency document (version 4.0.0, 8 July 2026) lists the following:

ProductFee (as of October 2026)
Broker: stablecoins0.99% (EURCV 0%)
Broker: Bitcoin and VSN0.99%
Broker: other crypto assets1.49%
Broker: small caps under €100 million and Spotlight assets2.49%
Bitpanda Fusion, up to €100,000 monthly volume0.25%
Bitpanda Fusion, above €250 million monthly volume0.02%
Crypto indices (buy and sell)1.99%
Staking20% of rewards
Crypto margin trading0.18% per day for the first 60 days, 0.3% closing fee

On top of the broker fee, you also pay a spread: the gap between the buy and sell price at the same moment. Paying fees with Bitpanda’s VSN token gives a 20% discount. Active traders should use Fusion, which aggregates liquidity from more than 12 venues and charges 0.25% per trade at the entry level, the same rate for limit and market orders. That is still higher than the 0.1% to 0.2% common on large order-book exchanges, but far below the broker tiers. To put the broker fee in perspective, a purchase worth $1,000 of Ether at 1.49% costs about $14.90 before the spread.

Security record

We found no public report of a hack of Bitpanda client funds since its launch in 2014. The company says crypto assets are kept in cold storage examined by an external auditor, that it holds ISO 27001 certification and a SOC 2 Type 2 report, and that it runs penetration tests and a public bug bounty programme.

Client assets are held in trust and segregated from Bitpanda’s own funds, which should keep them out of the estate in an insolvency, although the outcome would depend on national law. Two-factor authentication is optional; turn it on at sign-up. As with any custodial platform, coins you hold on Bitpanda are not in self-custody.

Products

  • Crypto: more than 650 cryptocurrencies as of October 2026, savings plans from €1 and crypto indices built with MarketVector;
  • Stocks and ETFs: over 10,000 stocks, ETFs and ETCs, with fractional shares and a €1 fee per trade;
  • Precious metals: gold, silver and other precious metals backed by physical metal, with no storage fee;
  • Staking: staking on selected coins, minus a 20% commission on rewards;
  • Fusion and margin: advanced charting, volume-based fees and leveraged crypto positions for experienced users.

Opening an account

Sign-up takes a few minutes in the app or on the website: you confirm your email, then complete identity verification with an official ID document, as required by EU anti-money laundering rules. Once verified, you can fund the account and place a first order from €1. Enable two-factor authentication before depositing any significant amount.

Deposits and withdrawals

Euro SEPA transfers are free on Bitpanda’s side, in both directions. You can also fund your account by bank card and Apple Pay; card costs depend on your bank and are shown before you confirm. PayPal deposits carry a 1.49% fee. Crypto deposits and withdrawals to your own wallet are supported, and you pay only the network fee, which Bitpanda says it does not keep.

Who Bitpanda suits

Bitpanda fits European beginners and long-term savers who want a regulated, simple app that holds crypto, stocks and metals in one place, often in their own language with 24/7 support. Monthly savings plans in euros are a strong point. It is a poor fit for frequent traders who use the broker app, for users in the US, and for anyone looking for perpetual futures, which Bitpanda does not offer.

How Bitpanda compares

Against Coinbase or Kraken, Bitpanda offers a wider choice of traditional assets and a stronger European regulatory footprint, but its broker fees are higher than their order-book fees. Against global platforms such as Bitget, it gives up derivatives in exchange for full MiCA coverage. Our guide on how to choose a crypto exchange explains how to weigh these trade-offs.

Our verdict and rating method

We rate Bitpanda 8.0/10. It scores very high on regulation and security (9/10), with three MiCA authorisations and no known hack, and well on deposits (8.5/10) thanks to free SEPA transfers. The app (8.5/10) is clean and beginner-friendly, and support (7.5/10) is available around the clock. Fees (6/10) pull the score down: 1.49% on most coins plus a spread is expensive unless you switch to Fusion.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bitpanda safe and regulated?

Bitpanda holds MiCA authorisations from Germany's BaFin (January 2025), Malta's MFSA (January 2025) and Austria's FMA (April 2025), all listed in the ESMA register. Client assets are held in trust, mostly in cold storage, and we found no public report of a hack of client funds since 2014.

How much does Bitpanda charge to buy Bitcoin?

As of October 2026, the broker app charges 0.99% on Bitcoin and stablecoins, 1.49% on most other coins and 2.49% on small caps, plus a spread. Bitpanda Fusion starts at 0.25% per trade and falls to 0.02% for very high monthly volumes.

Is Bitpanda available in the United States?

No. Bitpanda serves customers in the European Economic Area under its MiCA authorisations and does not accept US residents. American users who want a regulated platform can look at US-licensed exchanges such as Coinbase, Kraken or Gemini instead.

Can I withdraw crypto from Bitpanda to my own wallet?

Yes. Bitpanda supports crypto transfers to external wallets for supported coins. You pay the blockchain network fee, which Bitpanda says it does not set or keep. Check the network carefully before sending, because a recovery attempt for wrong deposits costs 15%.

What is Bitpanda Fusion?

Bitpanda Fusion is the platform's advanced trading interface. It aggregates liquidity from more than 12 venues, adds advanced charts and replaces broker premiums with volume-based fees, from 0.25% per trade up to €100,000 of monthly volume down to 0.02% above €250 million.
