Our review
This Exodus review looks at one of the oldest self-custody wallets, known for its polished desktop app, as of October 2026. Exodus is free to download and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, but its built-in swaps include a spread that starts at 0.5%. We assess its security, fees, payment features and who it really suits.
What is Exodus?
Exodus is a non-custodial hot wallet created in 2015 by JP Richardson and Daniel Castagnoli. The company behind it, Exodus Movement, Inc., is publicly traded in New York under the ticker EXOD, which makes its finances more visible than those of most wallet makers. It describes itself as a financial technology company, not a bank.
Exodus has always focused on ease of use: a clean portfolio view, charts and one-tap swaps. It has also moved into payments with Exodus Pay. If you are new to the topic, our guide to how crypto wallets work covers the basics.
Security model
Exodus stores your private keys encrypted on your device and does not require an account or personal data to use the wallet. Backup relies on a recovery phrase that restores the wallet on any compatible device. Exodus cannot recover it for you, so follow our seed phrase security guide. The app also supports device-based passkey protection.
A desktop wallet is only as safe as the computer it runs on: malware, fake downloads and remote-access scams are the main threats. For larger amounts, Exodus works with Trezor and Ledger hardware wallets, so transactions are approved on the device. Pairing it with a Trezor Safe 3 or a Ledger Nano X keeps the keys offline while you keep the Exodus interface.
Exodus is not open source: the code of its apps is not public, although the company publishes some libraries on GitHub. Users who want verifiable code should look elsewhere. In the sources we reviewed, we found no reported breach of the Exodus software comparable to the 2025 Trust Wallet extension attack.
To start safely, download Exodus only from exodus.com or the official app stores, write the recovery phrase on paper during setup, and send a small test amount before moving larger sums. Fake Exodus apps and “support” accounts on social media are a known trap.
Features and fees
Swaps
Exodus does not run an exchange: its swap feature routes orders to third-party providers and returns the coins to your wallet. Exodus says it charges no fee on transactions and that swap rates “start as low as 0.5%”. In practice, the cost is built into the exchange rate shown before you confirm and can be higher on small or less liquid pairs, so compare the final amount received.
| Cost | Amount (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Download and wallet use | Free |
| Sending and receiving | Network fee only (adjustable) |
| Built-in swaps | Spread from 0.5%, included in the rate |
| Buying crypto (XO Ramp) | Fees of the third-party provider |
On a USD 1,000 swap, a 0.5% spread already costs USD 5, before network fees. Frequent traders will usually pay less on an exchange or a DEX aggregator.
Buy, stake and pay
- Buy and sell crypto by card, bank account, Apple Pay or Google Pay through XO Ramp, a third-party provider.
- Stake several supported assets from the app, with variable rewards.
- Exodus Pay: instant payments to friends, a free Exodus Card usable with Apple Pay and Google Pay, and rewards. Card and swap services are provided by third parties.
- XO Suite, a self-custody offering for businesses.
In November 2025, Exodus agreed to acquire W3C Corp, parent of the card and payment specialists Baanx and Monavate, for USD 175 million, to control its card stack from wallet to payment. We found no officially announced Exodus wallet token; ignore any “Exodus airdrop” site and read our guide to avoiding crypto scams.
Support
Exodus offers 24/7 customer support with human agents, which is rare for a free wallet and a real plus for beginners. Support staff will never ask for your recovery phrase.
Supported assets and networks
Exodus advertises support for more than 1,000,000 assets, a figure that counts every token reachable on its supported blockchains rather than a curated list. Major networks include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP Ledger and Litecoin, along with popular stablecoins such as USDT. Check Exodus’s asset list before sending a specific token, as not every token is available everywhere in the app.
Who is Exodus for?
Exodus suits beginners and long-term holders who want an attractive desktop and mobile portfolio, simple swaps and responsive support. It is less suited to active DeFi users, to traders sensitive to fees, or to anyone who requires open-source software.
Alternatives
MetaMask is better for Ethereum DeFi, Phantom for Solana and Trust Wallet for maximum chain coverage on mobile. For savings, a hardware wallet remains the reference.
Verdict
Exodus is one of the friendliest wallets to start with, backed by a listed company and real 24/7 support. Closed code and swap spreads that are not itemised keep its score in the middle of our software wallet ranking.

Frequently asked questions
Is Exodus wallet safe?
Exodus is a self-custody wallet: your keys are encrypted on your device and the company cannot access them. Its code is not open source, and as a hot wallet it is exposed to malware on your computer or phone. For larger sums, connect it to a Trezor or Ledger hardware wallet.
What fees does Exodus charge?
Exodus says it charges no fee to send or receive crypto; you only pay the blockchain's network fee, which you can adjust. Built-in swaps include a spread that starts at 0.5% as of October 2026 and can be higher on small or illiquid pairs. Purchases via XO Ramp carry the provider's fees.
Does Exodus work with a hardware wallet?
Yes. Exodus supports Trezor and Ledger devices, so you can manage and swap assets in the Exodus interface while each transaction is approved on the hardware wallet. This is the recommended setup for long-term savings.
Is Exodus a public company?
Yes. Exodus Movement, Inc. trades in New York under the ticker EXOD. Being listed means it publishes financial reports, but it does not change the nature of the wallet: you alone hold your keys and your recovery phrase.
Can I recover my Exodus wallet if I lose my phone or computer?
Yes, if you saved your recovery phrase. Install Exodus on a new device and restore the wallet with that phrase. Exodus support cannot recover it for you and will never ask for it, so keep it written down offline in a safe place.
Crypto-assets are volatile and you can lose all the money you invest. Nothing published on Coindaro is investment advice.
