Self-custody
Self-custody means holding the private keys to your crypto yourself, in a non-custodial wallet, instead of leaving your coins with an exchange or another company that holds them for you.

Self-custody means you, and only you, control the private keys to your crypto. Your coins sit at addresses that only your wallet can sign for, rather than in an account at an exchange, a broker or an app. In regulation, the same idea appears as a “self-hosted” or “unhosted” wallet.
How self-custody works
When you buy crypto on a centralised exchange, the platform usually holds the coins in its own wallets and shows you a balance. That balance is a claim on the company. To switch to self-custody, you set up a non-custodial wallet (an app or a hardware device), back up its seed phrase and withdraw your coins to one of its addresses. From then on, no company can freeze, lend or lose those coins, and no transaction happens without your signature.
A concrete example
In November 2022, the exchange FTX halted customer withdrawals and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 11 November. Customers who kept funds on the platform could not access them and had to wait for the bankruptcy process. Users who had moved their coins to their own wallets before the collapse were not affected, because FTX never held their keys. Earlier failures, such as Mt. Gox in 2014, taught the same lesson.
Why it matters for users
- Protection against the insolvency, hacking or freezing of a platform.
- Direct access to DeFi applications, staking and other on-chain services.
- Privacy and independence: you need no one’s permission to move your funds.
Limits and risks
Self-custody moves the whole responsibility to you. There is no password reset: lose your seed phrase and the coins are lost forever. Phishing, fake wallet apps and malicious transactions target self-custody users precisely because there is no one to reverse a theft. Inheritance needs planning, since relatives cannot recover funds without the keys.
Regulated platforms also have advantages, such as customer support, fiat on-ramps and, in the EU, licensing under MiCA. Many people keep a trading balance on an exchange and long-term holdings in self-custody. Start small, test a restore with your backup, then move larger amounts.
