The bitcoin price today stood near $82,610 at 06:04 UTC on Wednesday 21 October, up 1.2% over 24 hours according to Coindaro market data, as Asian stocks bounced on strong US earnings released after Tuesday’s close. South Korea’s Kospi jumped 3.7% and Taiwan’s Taiex 1.4%, CoinDesk reported at 04:07 UTC. Bitcoin followed at a distance and again failed to hold above $83,000. The largest move among the big coins came from Zcash, up 11% to about $1,260 on reports that its NU7 upgrade has an activation height.
The script has flipped since Tuesday morning. Then, Seoul sold chip stocks hard and bitcoin barely moved, as we wrote in yesterday’s Asia session report. Today Asian equities rally by several percent and bitcoin adds about a third of that. Neither the sell-off nor the rebound has pulled the largest cryptocurrency out of the range it has held for a week.
Bitcoin price today: up 1.2%, still capped below $83,000
The Coindaro snapshot taken at 06:04 UTC shows BTC at $82,610, down 0.17% in the last hour, up 1.19% over 24 hours and down 1.30% over seven days. CoinDesk had it just above $82,700 in Asian morning hours, a 1.3% gain. Journal du Coin put it near $82,700 at 05:18 UTC, citing CoinGecko, with a 24-hour volume of $26.8 billion.
The same French outlet gives Tuesday’s range as roughly $81,300 to $83,200. That is the ceiling again. The $83,000 area already stopped buyers on Monday, when chip stocks rebounded on Wall Street and bitcoin stalled, a session we covered in our analysis of the 19 October US session. Journal du Coin’s chart places support around $81,000.
CoinDesk’s headline speaks of bitcoin “around $83,000”, but the body of its report does not go that far: the figure it gives is just above $82,700. At no point in the data we checked this morning did bitcoin hold above $83,000.
The rest of the large caps moved in the same direction, by slightly more. Ether gained 1.88% to $2,437 and XRP 2.58% to $1.33, according to the 06:04 UTC snapshot. BTC dominance stood at 59.5% and the Fear and Greed index at 63, in “greed” territory.

Wall Street’s Tuesday close was not a tech rally
The phrase going around this morning is that AI earnings revived tech. The cash session says something narrower. According to the Associated Press closing table, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 529.85 points, or 1%, to 52,495.88 on Tuesday 20 October. The S&P 500 added 0.3% to 7,712.57. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 6.07 points to 26,424.82, a loss of less than 0.1%.
Small caps did best. The Russell 2000 gained 1.7% to 2,773.42. So the tech bounce that Asia traded overnight came after the bell, in extended trading, not during the session itself.
CoinDesk lists the after-hours movers. SpaceX rose 8% in extended trading after its results, Super Micro jumped 16%, and Nasdaq 100 futures climbed about 1%. Those are the numbers Seoul and Taipei woke up to.
SpaceX kept its 18,712 bitcoin
SpaceX’s third-quarter report matters to crypto for one line of its balance sheet. Bitcoin.com News, which went through the filing, reported revenue of $14.6 billion, up 161%, net income of $4.4 billion and capital spending of $19.6 billion. Digital assets were carried at $1.573 billion at 30 September, against $1.637 billion at the end of 2025.
According to the same outlet, earlier filings and Arkham data put the company’s holding at 18,712 BTC, which Arkham links mainly to Coinbase Prime custody, and the quarterly materials show no purchase or sale. Bitcoin.com reads the $64 million drop in book value as a change in valuation, not a sale.

Kospi up 3.7%, oil above $110: what Asia traded
The Kospi’s 3.7% gain, as reported by CoinDesk, follows a fall of more than 3% on Tuesday, so Seoul has roughly recovered the ground it gave up. A separate midday market report put the index at 5,733.82, up 3.4%, after a 4% gain early in the session. Closing levels for Asia were not available when this piece was written.
Not every market joined in. Australia’s Nextdc, a data-centre operator, lost about 40% after cutting its outlook, according to CoinDesk.
Energy is the other weight on risk assets. Brent crude rose above $110 a barrel as attacks on ships around the Strait of Hormuz threatened shipments, CoinDesk reported, and US industry data pointed to another drop in stockpiles. The dollar firmed slightly overnight and Treasuries gave back part of Tuesday’s gains, per the same report.
For bitcoin holders the timing is awkward. Dearer oil feeds inflation worries six days before the Federal Reserve meets.
Hashdex sets $84,000 as the test before the Fed
Asset manager Hashdex, in an outlook cited by CoinDesk, argues that bitcoin needs to get back above $84,000 before the Fed’s 27-28 October meeting to show renewed strength. At 06:04 UTC it was about $1,400 short of that level.
The firm also counts the length of the current downturn. By its measure, bitcoin’s bear phase had lasted 359 days at 30 September, compared with 361, 377 and 411 days in the three earlier bear markets since 2011, according to CoinDesk’s account. Short-term holders, the group most likely to sell into a dip, held 16% of supply, their lowest share since January 2023.
Hashdex reads a small short-term holder base as fewer forced sellers. It is one manager’s view, and the comparison with past cycles rests on a sample of three.
Zcash NU7: CoinDesk says the height is set, the official page does not yet
ZEC rose about 11% to roughly $1,260, according to CoinDesk, which tied the move to Zcash developers having “set the mainnet activation height for NU7”. A Cointelegraph market ticker the same morning showed $1,256.41, up 10.75%.
That claim has no second source so far. The official NU7 upgrade page still read “The activation height for NU7 has not yet been set” when Coindaro checked it again at about 06:20 UTC on 21 October, and it gave no date or block. We could not open the Zcash Community Forum thread where the schedule is discussed. Until the height appears on the official page or in a developer post, it is CoinDesk’s report, not a confirmed fact.
The timing fits the published plan. Sean Bowe posted a schedule on the community forum on 17 September: code complete on 30 September, testnet on 6 October, a final mainnet decision with the activation height on 20 October, and a mainnet target of 5 November, described as a target rather than a commitment. NU7 activated on testnet at block 4,465,026 on 4 October, according to a testnet explorer cited by Crypto Briefing.
What NU7 changes
The upgrade cuts the target time between blocks from 75 seconds to 25 seconds (ZIP 218), so payments confirm about three times faster. It disables version 4 transactions, which closes the old Sprout shielded blockchain that runs exactly as written when it is called, holding and moving funds according to its code, without an intermediary able to change the outcome.">smart contract holding reserves of two or more tokens, supplied by users, that a decentralized exchange uses to execute trades automatically at a price set by a formula.">pool. CryptoSlate estimated about 22,309 ZEC still sat there on 17 October, roughly 0.13% of supply. It also adds a Network Sustainability Mechanism that directs part of transaction fees to a reserve paid out over time; CoinDesk puts that share at 60%, a figure we have not checked against the specification.
The rally starts from a lower base. Blockhead had ZEC near $1,140 on 19 October, about 29% under its late-September high close to $1,600. Our Zcash coin page covers the privacy model and supply. Trading access is uneven: THORChain still has ZEC halted, with its v3.21 release due on 23 October.

COMP and CVX up more than 20% with no catalyst found
Two DeFi tokens topped the 24-hour gainers in the Coindaro snapshot at 06:04 UTC: Convex (CVX) up 21.68% and Compound (COMP) up 21.05%.
For COMP, Cryptopolitan counted a 27.3% rise in the 24 hours to 1 pm ET on 20 October, from $21.51 to $27.38 on CoinGecko data, with $114.51 million traded. It wrote that the move had not been tied to any governance vote, partnership or announcement. Compound’s total staking or liquidity, measured at current market prices. It is the main size metric in DeFi.">value locked was $1.52 billion, 8.7% below its 21 September level, according to the same report.
For CVX we found no news at all that explains the jump. Nothing we read links the two moves either. We are not attaching a reason to them.
Bitcoin ETF flows for Tuesday are not published yet
Tuesday’s figures for US spot bitcoin ETFs were not out at the time of writing. Farside Investors’ page refused our requests again at about 06:20 UTC, and the TFTC table of Farside data stopped at Monday 19 October.
Monday was the best day of the month: $526.6 million of net inflows, with BlackRock’s IBIT taking in $665.2 million while Fidelity’s FBTC lost $83.6 million and Grayscale’s GBTC $54.9 million. Even so, October stood about $90.6 million in the red after 13 trading days. US ether ETFs lost $103.3 million on Monday, a fourth straight day of outflows, according to SoSoValue data cited by PANews.
We also found no reliable count of liquidations for the last 24 hours. Both numbers will be in our evening report if they are published by then.
Wednesday’s agenda: Alpenglow goes live, the Fed meets in a week
The US calendar is light on data. MBA mortgage applications are due at 11:00 UTC, the Energy Department’s weekly petroleum inventories at 14:30 UTC, and the Treasury sells $13 billion of 20-year bonds at 17:00 UTC, according to the Investrade weekly calendar. With Brent above $110, the oil inventory figure carries more weight than usual. Big tech reports after Wednesday’s US close, dates confirmed by the companies’ own announcements: Meta and Texas Instruments hold their calls at 20:30 UTC, IBM at 21:00 UTC and Tesla at 21:30 UTC.
Solana switches to Alpenglow today, replacing the voting system the network has used since 2020. The handover starts with epoch 1064, which Solana’s upgrade page puts at approximately 13:20 UTC; it warns that epoch start times drift, so the hour is an estimate. Some outlets had said around 15:00 UTC earlier. The old TowerBFT system runs the first 5,000 slots, about 18 minutes, and Alpenglow takes over at slot 459,653,000. Solana’s page targets finality of roughly 150 milliseconds, against about 12.8 seconds today (CoinDesk cites about six seconds). The background is in our piece on the Alpenglow date.
One practical warning comes from Raiku chief executive Robin Nordnes, quoted by CoinDesk: Solana’s transaction count will look much lower this week because validator votes move off-chain. A sudden drop on dashboards will not mean users left.
The Fed meets on 27 and 28 October and its officials are in their pre-meeting blackout, so no Fed speaker is scheduled today. Our crypto week ahead lists the other dates. We found no large token unlock scheduled for today; TechFlow lists ADA, EIGEN and ENA unlocks on 22 and 23 October.
What is still unknown this morning
- Whether the NU7 mainnet activation height is set, and at which block: only CoinDesk says so.
- Net flows of US spot bitcoin and ether ETFs on Tuesday 20 October.
- Liquidations over the last 24 hours.
- Any reason for the COMP and CVX moves.
- The exact time of Alpenglow’s activation and Asian closing levels.
The next marker for bitcoin is the $83,000 area it has failed to clear since Monday, then the $84,000 that Hashdex names before the Fed decision on 28 October.
