Coinbase is one of the most regulated and easiest exchanges in the US and Europe, with a MiCA licence and a clean record on customer funds, but its fees are high unless you use Coinbase Advanced.

Our review

Coinbase is the largest crypto exchange based in the United States and the only one listed on Nasdaq (ticker COIN). This Coinbase review looks at what it offers in October 2026: the licences it holds on both sides of the Atlantic, how its fees work, the May 2025 data breach, and the products it has added as it turns into what it calls an “everything exchange”. In short, it is one of the most regulated platforms you can use, but rarely the cheapest.

Coinbase at a glance

Coinbase was founded in 2012 by Brian Armstrong, still its CEO, and Fred Ehrsam. It went public in April 2021. The company describes itself as remote-first and has no headquarters; its holding company, Coinbase Global, Inc., is a Delaware corporation. Beyond the retail app, it runs four exchanges (Coinbase Exchange, Coinbase International Exchange, Coinbase Derivatives Exchange and Deribit, bought in August 2025), a custody business for institutions, and Base, an Ethereum layer 2 network.

Regulation and licences

Coinbase’s 2025 annual report lists an unusually complete set of licences:

  • United States: money transmitter licences in every state that requires one, a New York BitLicense since January 2017, a limited purpose trust charter for Coinbase Custody (October 2018) and a registration with FinCEN as a money services business.
  • European Union: a MiCA licence granted by Luxembourg’s CSSF to Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. on 20 June 2025, passported across the EEA, as shown on ESMA’s interim MiCA register. Fiat services run through an e-money institution licensed by the Central Bank of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom: registration with the FCA as a cryptoasset business, plus an FCA-authorised e-money institution.
  • Canada: money services business with FINTRAC and restricted dealer registration with the Ontario Securities Commission as principal regulator.
  • Elsewhere: a Class F licence in Bermuda and registrations in Argentina and India, among others.

To see why a MiCA licence matters for European users, read MiCA regulation explained.

Enforcement history

Coinbase’s record is not spotless. On 4 January 2023, New York’s financial regulator (NYDFS) announced a $100 million settlement: a $50 million penalty and $50 million of compliance investment, after finding weak customer due diligence and a backlog of more than 100,000 unreviewed transaction monitoring alerts (NYDFS). The SEC sued Coinbase in June 2023, alleging it operated as an unregistered exchange; the case was dismissed with prejudice on 28 February 2025.

Coinbase fees

Coinbase uses two pricing models, and the difference matters:

Way of tradingHow you payGood to know
Simple trade (Buy/Sell)A spread built into the price plus a transaction feeEasy, but the most expensive option
Coinbase AdvancedMaker-taker fees by 30-day volume tierHighest rates at the entry tier, falling with volume
Coinbase One (subscription)Monthly feeRemoves trading fees on many trades; the spread still applies
Crypto withdrawalsNetwork feeVaries with the coin and the network

Coinbase does not compete on price. Its entry-tier Advanced rates are well above the 0.10% charged by Binance or Bybit, and Simple trades add a spread on top. If you buy regularly, switching to Advanced or using limit orders makes a real difference. Check the official fee page and the fee shown before you confirm any order; as of October 2026, we could not publish exact tier figures without confirming them on that page.

Security record

Coinbase has never lost customer funds to a hack of its own wallets. The company states that it holds customer assets one-to-one and keeps most of them in cold storage, and as a listed company it publishes audited financial statements every year, which offers more assurance than a proof of reserves alone.

Its worst incident was a data breach. On 11 May 2025, a criminal group demanded money after paying overseas support contractors to copy customer data. According to Coinbase’s filing with the SEC, the stolen data included names, addresses, masked bank details, the last four digits of Social Security numbers and ID document images, but no passwords or private keys. Coinbase refused to pay, fired the staff involved, promised to reimburse customers tricked into sending funds, and estimated the cost at $180 to $400 million. The lesson for users: expect phishing calls in Coinbase’s name and never move funds at the request of “support”.

Products

  • Spot trading on about 400 crypto assets as of October 2026, through the simple app or Coinbase Advanced.
  • In the US, futures and perpetual-style futures, plus stocks and prediction markets launched in late 2025; outside the US, perpetuals on Coinbase International Exchange and options on Deribit, depending on eligibility.
  • Staking and USDC rewards, whose availability depends on your country.
  • A self-custody wallet and Base, Coinbase’s layer 2 network.

Opening an account

Sign-up takes a few minutes: an email, a phone number for two-factor authentication, then identity verification (KYC) with an ID document and a selfie. US users also give their Social Security number, as required by law. Once verified, you can link a bank account or a card. We recommend a passkey or a security key rather than SMS codes, and an allowlist for withdrawal addresses, especially after the 2025 breach.

Deposit and withdrawal methods

Coinbase supports the widest range of funding methods among the platforms we review: ACH and wire transfers in the US, SEPA transfers in Europe, debit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, PayPal in some countries, and crypto deposits. Card purchases cost more than bank transfers. New accounts may face holding periods on withdrawals after a bank deposit.

Who Coinbase suits, and who it does not

Coinbase suits beginners and cautious investors in the US, the UK, Canada and the EU who want a licensed, listed company and a very simple app. It suits less well active traders who watch every basis point, or anyone looking for exotic altcoins. Before you start, our guide to buying crypto walks through the first steps.

How Coinbase compares

Kraken is its closest rival: also licensed in the US and the EU, with more coins and stronger support, but also expensive at the entry tier. Binance, OKX and Bybit are cheaper and offer more derivatives, but Binance has no MiCA licence and does not serve US residents, and Bybit does not serve the US either. Coinbase’s edge is trust and regulation, paid for in fees.

  • High fees on simple trades, expensive entry tier on Advanced
  • May 2025 data breach exposed customer identity data
  • Fewer coins and fewer derivatives than offshore rivals

Frequently asked questions

Is Coinbase safe?

Coinbase is licensed in the US, the EU and the UK, publishes audited accounts and has never lost customer funds to a wallet hack. In May 2025, however, bribed support contractors leaked customer identity data, which fuels phishing. Use two-factor authentication and never move funds at the request of anyone claiming to be support.

Is Coinbase available in the US?

Yes. Coinbase is a US company with money transmitter licences in every state that requires one and a New York BitLicense since 2017, so it serves residents of all states, including New York. Some products, such as staking, futures or prediction markets, depend on your state and eligibility.

Does Coinbase have a MiCA licence?

Yes. Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. received a MiCA licence from Luxembourg's CSSF on 20 June 2025, which lets Coinbase serve customers across the European Economic Area. It appears on ESMA's interim MiCA register. Fiat payments in Europe run through an e-money institution regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.

Why are Coinbase fees so high?

Simple Buy and Sell orders include a spread on top of a transaction fee, which makes them the most expensive way to trade. Coinbase Advanced uses lower maker-taker fees that fall with volume, and the Coinbase One subscription removes fees on many trades. Always compare the total cost shown before confirming.

What happened in the 2025 Coinbase data breach?

On 11 May 2025, criminals who had bribed overseas support contractors demanded a ransom. They obtained names, addresses, masked bank data and ID images, but no passwords or private keys. Coinbase refused to pay, promised to reimburse scammed customers and estimated the cost at $180 to $400 million.
