About the project

Jupiter is the main trading hub of the Solana blockchain. It started in October 2021 as a DEX aggregator, a router that splits each swap across many Solana exchanges to find the best price, and has grown into a suite of products: perpetual futures, limit orders, lending, a mobile wallet and prediction markets. Its JUP token, launched with a large airdrop in January 2024, governs the Jupiter DAO. This page explains how Jupiter works, what JUP is for after the 2025 burn and the 2026 emissions cut, and which risks users should weigh.

What Jupiter does

Most Solana users meet Jupiter when they swap tokens, directly on jup.ag or through wallets and apps that use its routing engine. Instead of trading on a single decentralized exchange, the aggregator compares liquidity across dozens of venues and splits the order to reduce price impact. Around that core, Jupiter offers perpetual contracts with leverage of up to 250x, Jupiter Lend (built with the Fluid team and launched in 2025), tokenized stocks, prediction markets and its own wallet.

How Jupiter works

A swap request goes to Jupiter’s routing algorithm, which computes the best path, sometimes through several intermediate tokens, and returns a single transaction for the user to sign. The user keeps custody throughout. Users set a slippage tolerance; if the price moves beyond it, the transaction fails rather than filling at a bad price. For perpetuals, a liquidity pool (JLP) acts as the counterparty to traders and earns fees, while prices come from Edge, an oracle by Chaos Labs, with Chainlink and Pyth used for checks and fallback.

The JUP token

JUP launched on 31 January 2024, when about 955,000 wallets became eligible for the first airdrop. 10 billion JUP were minted, half for the community. On 26 January 2025, at the Catstanbul event, Jupiter burned 3 billion tokens, bringing total supply to 7 billion and cutting the team allocation. Half of protocol fees fund JUP buybacks held in a reserve nicknamed the Litterbox. In February 2026, a DAO vote backed by about 75% of votes paused new emissions, moved about 700 million JUP to a community-controlled multisig and replaced team token payments with internal credit. As of October 2026, roughly half of the total supply circulates.

Governance

JUP holders stake their tokens on vote.jup.ag to vote and earn Active Staking Rewards, after discussion on the discuss.jup.ag forum. In June 2025, COO Kash Dhanda announced a pause on DAO votes until 2026 amid community concerns; voting resumed for the emissions proposal in early 2026. Founders and team are reported to control a significant share of supply, and the core team, led by the pseudonymous founder Meow, still sets the product direction.

Security and risks

Jupiter publishes audits by Offside Labs, OtterSec, Sec3, Zenith, MixBytes, Neodyme, Certora (formal verification) and a Code4rena contest, covering swaps, perpetuals, limit orders and lending. No exploit of its contracts has been reported. The main risks:

  • Solana dependency: network outages or congestion affect every Jupiter product.
  • Leverage and counterparty risk: perpetual traders can be liquidated, and JLP holders take the other side of their trades.
  • Oracle and lending risk: wrong prices or bad collateral can hit lending vaults; Jupiter’s claim of fully isolated vaults was publicly challenged in 2025.
  • Scam risk: fake JUP airdrop sites, lookalike tokens and hacked social accounts.
  • Governance concentration: decisions depend heavily on the core team and large holders.

Our risk score is 3 out of 5: a well-audited and widely used platform, with leverage, Solana and governance risks.

How to use Jupiter safely

  • Type jup.ag yourself and never connect your wallet to airdrop links from social media.
  • Check token mint addresses and use the verified-token filter before swapping.
  • Keep slippage low on large trades and avoid high leverage on perpetuals.
  • If you are new to DeFi, read our DeFi guide before using lending or JLP.

Strengths and points of vigilance

Strengths

  • Main liquidity router of Solana, integrated by many wallets
  • Broad product range: swaps, perps, lending, mobile
  • Many audits and formal verification of lending
  • Half of fees used for JUP buybacks; new emissions paused

Points of vigilance

  • Pseudonymous founder and team-driven governance
  • Leverage and JLP counterparty risk on perpetuals
  • Fully dependent on Solana's uptime
  • Frequent target of fake airdrop and phishing sites
