About Avalanche (AVAX)
Avalanche (AVAX) is a layer-1 blockchain built for fast finality and for launching many independent blockchains, called Avalanche L1s, that connect to one network. Its native coin, AVAX, pays transaction fees, secures the network through staking and serves as the common unit across the ecosystem. Ethereum developers can deploy their existing smart contracts on it with little change.
What is Avalanche?
The Avalanche consensus protocol was first described in May 2018 in a paper published under the pseudonym “Team Rocket” and was then developed by researchers around Cornell professor Emin Gün Sirer, who co-founded Ava Labs. The code was open-sourced in March 2020, a public AVAX sale raised $42 million in July 2020 and the mainnet went live on 21 September 2020.
How Avalanche works
Avalanche uses a proof-of-stake system with a distinctive consensus. Instead of every validator talking to every other one, each node repeatedly polls a small random sample of validators and adopts the majority answer. After a few rounds the network converges, which gives finality in a short time without energy-intensive mining.
The main network, called the Primary Network, runs three chains:
- **C-Chain:** an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) chain for smart contracts and DeFi, compatible with Solidity and common Ethereum tools.
- **P-Chain:** coordinates validators, staking and the creation of Avalanche L1s.
- **X-Chain:** creates and transfers native assets, including AVAX.
To validate the Primary Network, a node must stake at least 2,000 AVAX, according to the Avalanche documentation. AVAX holders who do not run a node can delegate to a validator and share its rewards.
AVAX supply
The 2020 whitepaper sets a hard cap of 720 million AVAX, with 360 million available at mainnet launch; the rest is released over time as staking rewards. Transaction fees paid in AVAX are burned, which removes coins from circulation.
Key dates
- **May 2018:** the Team Rocket paper introduces the Avalanche consensus family.
- **July 2020:** public token sale raises $42 million in less than five hours.
- **21 September 2020:** mainnet launch.
- **August 2022:** leaked videos involving a lawyer close to Ava Labs prompt allegations of tactics against competitors, which Emin Gün Sirer publicly denies.
- **16 December 2024:** the Etna upgrade (also called Avalanche9000) “reinvents subnets” as Avalanche L1s with a lighter, pay-as-you-go validator model and cuts the C-Chain minimum base fee from 25 to 1 nAVAX.
- **22 September 2026:** the Helicon upgrade activates in AvalancheGo v1.15.0: transactions are accepted before execution, the minimum staking period falls from two weeks to 48 hours and the uptime needed for rewards rises from 80% to 90%.
What AVAX is used for
AVAX pays for transactions on the Primary Network, is staked to secure it and is used in governance of protocol parameters. On the C-Chain it powers DeFi applications such as exchanges, lending markets and stablecoin transfers. Companies and institutions use Avalanche L1s to run their own chains with custom rules, fee tokens and validator sets, for example for games, tokenized assets or identity systems.
Avalanche vs Ethereum and other layer 1s
Avalanche’s C-Chain speaks the same language as Ethereum, which makes porting applications easy. The main difference is architecture: rather than scaling through rollups, Avalanche lets projects launch sovereign L1s that can communicate with each other through native messaging. Compared with Solana or Sui, it trades a single very fast global chain for many interoperable ones.
Risks and criticism
- **Fragmentation:** liquidity and users are spread across many L1s, and each new chain must attract its own validators.
- **Influence of Ava Labs and the foundation:** they hold significant resources and shape the roadmap.
- **Bridges and DeFi risk:** moving assets between chains via a bridge and using DeFi apps adds smart-contract risk.
- **Competition:** many layer 1 and layer 2 networks target the same developers and businesses.
- **Volatility:** AVAX can lose a large part of its value quickly.
How to store AVAX
Make sure you use the right chain: exchanges usually withdraw AVAX to the C-Chain, which has Ethereum-style addresses starting with “0x”. Core, the wallet built by Ava Labs, and many EVM wallets support AVAX, and major hardware wallets can secure it. For staking, check whether your wallet supports delegation on the P-Chain. Beware of fake wallet sites and airdrops; our guide on avoiding crypto scams lists the warning signs.
Frequently asked questions
What is Avalanche (AVAX) used for?
AVAX pays transaction fees on Avalanche's Primary Network, is staked by validators and delegators to secure it and is used to vote on some protocol parameters. On the EVM-compatible C-Chain it is the base asset for DeFi apps, and businesses use Avalanche L1s to run their own chains connected to the wider Avalanche network.
What is the maximum supply of AVAX?
The Avalanche whitepaper sets a hard cap of 720 million AVAX. About half, 360 million, was available when the mainnet launched in September 2020, and the rest is released gradually as staking rewards. Because transaction fees paid in AVAX are burned, the number of coins in circulation can grow more slowly than issuance.
What are the X-Chain, P-Chain and C-Chain?
They are the three chains of Avalanche's Primary Network. The C-Chain runs Ethereum-compatible smart contracts and is where most users and DeFi apps operate. The P-Chain manages validators, staking and new Avalanche L1s. The X-Chain creates and transfers native assets. Exchanges usually send AVAX to the C-Chain.
How much AVAX do you need to run a validator?
A Primary Network validator must stake at least 2,000 AVAX. Since the Helicon upgrade of 22 September 2026, the minimum staking period is 48 hours instead of two weeks, and validators need at least 90% uptime to earn rewards. Holders with smaller amounts can delegate AVAX to an existing validator instead.
Who created Avalanche?
The Avalanche consensus was first described in 2018 by an anonymous group called Team Rocket and developed by researchers around Cornell professor Emin Gün Sirer. Sirer co-founded Ava Labs, the company that built the network and launched the mainnet on 21 September 2020. The Avalanche Foundation also supports the ecosystem.
